Prices and Compact Bidding Languages for Combinatorial Auctions
نویسنده
چکیده
Combinatorial auctions are currently used for a wide variety of B2B commerce, most notably for industrial procurement of raw materials and shipping lanes, and in the government sector for the allocation of spectrum licenses, wholesale electricity generation, and the proposed control of airport congestion through the auctioning of landing-slot rights. In this paper we summarize the contributions to the study of combinatorial auctions made by Day (2004). We begin by showing an improved technique for the computation of “bidder-Paretooptimal” prices within the “core.” This technique calls for the automated solution of several “winnerdetermination” problems, and like similar combinatorial auction techniques requires each bidder to submit valuations for all bundles of interest to a proxy. Unfortunately, communicating preferences to a proxy may require an exponential amount of information relative to the number of items being auctioned. To address this exponential communication problem, we introduce two new compact bidding languages, and discuss the details, implementations, and relative merits of these approaches.

Bidding Languages for Combinatorial Auctions
Combinatorial auctions provide a valuable mechanism for the allocation of goods in settings where buyer valuations exhibit complex structure with respect to substitutabilityand complementarity. Most algorithms are designed to work with explicit bids for concrete bundles of goods. However, logical bidding languages allow the expression of complex utility functions in a natural and concise way. W...
متن کاملAn Optimization Framework for Combining the Petroleum Replenishment Problem with the Optimal Bidding in Combinatorial Auctions
We address in this paper a periodic petroleum station replenishment problem (PPSRP) that aims to plan the delivery of petroleum products to a set of geographically dispatched stations. It is assumed that each station is characterized by its weekly demand and by its frequency of service. The main objective of the delivery process is to minimize the total travelled distance by the vailable trucks...
متن کاملCompact bidding languages and supplier selection for markets with economics of scale and scope
Combinatorial auctions have been used in procurement markets with economies of scope. Preference elicitation is already a problem in single-unit combinatorial auctions, but it becomes prohibitive even for small instances of multiunit combinatorial auctions, as suppliers cannot be expected to enumerate a sufficient number of bids that would allow an auctioneer to find the efficient allocation. A...
متن کاملCompact bid languages and core-pricing in large multi-object auctions
Combinatorial auctions address the fundamental problem of allocating multiple items in the presence of complex bidder preferences including complements or substitutes. They have found application in public and private sector auctions. Many real-world markets involve the sale of a large number of items, limiting the direct application of combinatorial auctions due to both computational intractab...
متن کاملEffects of Suboptimal Bidding in Combinatorial Auctions
Though the VCG auction assumes a central place in the mechanism design literature, there are a number of reasons for favoring iterative combinatorial auction designs. Several promising ascending auction formats have been developed throughout the past few years based on primal-dual and subgradient algorithms and linear programming theory. Prices are interpreted as a feasible dual solution and th...
